The ultimate IE hack

Well, me and Prabhath were discussing weird IE bugs, and I suggested the ultimate IE hack to him. One line to wipe away all the bugs.
Now, I’m gonna share it with you.

Just add this at the top of your CSS:

* html { display: none; }

Et voilà!

Thanks for the tip Indranil. It worked like a dream… :P

  2. Indranil Says:

Glad to be of service. :)

  3. wodge Says:

Thats’ going to be a pretty useful tip! :-)

  4. pickupjojo Says:

    LMAO, very funny tip!
    R.I.P. I.E., ahaha!

PS: Being French myself, I can tell you that it’s “Et voilà !” and not “Et voila!”, as you wrote. An accidental mistake that I nevertheless want to be corrected. ;-)

  5. pickupjojo Says:

I think that my two asteriks made you site crash.
    Sorry. ^^

  6. mdk Says:

Maybe another asterisk will fix it *

  7. Indranil Says:

*pickupjojo* : Thanks for correcting me. Corrected the entry.
Also, I didn’t notice any crash!

  8. Olly Says:

I did, the site’s gone all screwy after pickupjojo’s comment!

Nice hack too - I might have to use that one ;-)

  9. Dave Says:

    LOL! CLASSIC!

  10. Indranil Says:

*Olly* and *pickupjojo* and *mdk* : It was because of Textile. It’s all fixed now, hopefully. Strangely, the bug never showed in Safari.

  11. Lakshan Says:

Unfortunately your ultimate hack won’t work in IE 7 :(

  12. Indranil Says:

*Lakshan* : Well, IE 7 is a new browser, and it should have a chance to show its talents, right? ;)

  13. Lakshan Says:

Indranil : The Reports say Holly hack will no longer work in IE 7.. That means all the IE alone hacks we did (including THIS) will not work in IE7 :(

  14. Indranil Says:

*Lakshan* : That is what I meant. This is not supposed to work in IE 7, as it is a new browser.
Also, just to make it clear, this isn’t a Holly hack.

  15. christian becher Says:

    Yeah, that´s working fine ;-)

  16. Lakshan Says:

Indranil : But I think IE 7 still don’t fully support CSS 2.1 which will left us nowhere.

  17. Indranil Says:

*Lakshan* : but it’ll be really unfair to rob IE 7 from its 15 minutes of fame, now, wouldn’t it? ;)

  18. pickupjojo Says:

    Nice. ;-)

  19. Sumerah Says:

People who can’t make a decent cross-browser website shouldn’t be making websites.

  20. Indranil Says:

*Sumerah* : And people who can’t make a browser comply with the latest standards and recommendations shouldn’t be making browsers.

And anyways, once you’ve actually tried to wrestle a browser into submission will you realize how hard it is to make sites cross-browser compatible.

  21. the occasional blog Says:

    Wow! Indranil !…

  22. Arbitrary Says:

    Very funny….

And I think it goes both ways…both parties need to adapt to each other.
